General Notes: I really can't remember much about my mother for I was only 5 or 6 when she died. We lived w ith our Grandfather Ladd with a housekeeper as my father was a woodsman and went in the wood s every winter for the winter. They totted the logs to Sebec River in the spring they put th em in the river and the men drove them down the lake with dogs. Once in a while they would ge t in a jam and they sent my father out to beak the jam. For he was quick on his feet. It wa s a dangerous job if you missed your footing you would drown. Then they camped at Sebec Vill age. They called it the Wamgin. They had a cook and a cooker, he waited on the cook. The y dug a big hole in the ground and filled it with hot brick sand, put two iron kettles in ful l of beans to bake and covered them. When it was time to eat they would dig them out and al l the children would be waiting with their tin plates and black handled knives and forks fo r beans. We practically lived there whilethey were there. We lived in Sebec until my grand father died then we were separated. My father wouldn't trust us with a housekeeper for the w inter. Virginia went to live with a family by the name of Hastle. El la went with Aunt Rebi e andI stayed there some. She had a daughter who couldn't get along with any of us. She ha d always had her own way. El la could for she stayed around the barn with my uncle most of t he time. So that left me to live with anyone he could get who would take me. When I lived i n Sebec they said I was awfully hard on my clothes but I never had any new ones. I always ha d Ell as after she out grew them. I can not remember of having only one new dress. Helen Ken t a neighbor brought some silky blue cloth and made me a dress trimmed it with white lace . I can still see that dress in my mind now. I thought it was a beautiful but I could wea r it only on Sunday or to special things. I had to go to her house Sunday morning and she wo uld put me in a tin tub and give me a bath and put on the clothes she had made me. We alway s went to church and Sunday school when it was over I went back to Kents and put on my old cl othes and would not let me take the dress home.I always went there to get dressed. She wa s really awfully good to us. My father died when I was 13 or 14. The we all had to shift fo r ourselves. El la stayed with Aunt Rebie and the Hastles still kept Virginia. I went to li ve with my mother's brother in Sangerville but she took boarders and I had to work my board s o had all of the dishes to wash and every night when I got home from school there was all o f the days dishes to wash and by the time I got those done it would besupper and more dishes . I was in high school by that time. She was bound I wouldn't go to school so I found anothe r place to live and worked by way through high school and graduated in 1912.1 OBJE
